Causes of Spinal Cord Diseases
Causes of Spinal Cord Diseases
These diseases can arise from various causes, including trauma, inflammation, infection, tumours, and degenerative processes. Some common examples include spinal cord injury, tumours, infections like meningitis or polio, inflammatory conditions like transverse myelitis, and degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis
- Spinal Cord Injury (SCI):Damage to the spinal cord, often resulting from trauma, leading to varying degrees of paralysis and loss of sensation.
- Tumors:Abnormal growths within the spinal cord or surrounding tissues, potentially causing compression or damage to the spinal cord.
- Infections:Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can lead to inflammation and damage to the spinal cord.
- Inflammatory Conditions:Diseases like transverse myelitis can cause inflammation of the spinal cord, affecting its function.
- Degenerative Diseases:Conditions like multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) can cause progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord.
- Spinal Stenosis:Narrowing of the spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord and nerve roots.
- Herniated Discs:Discs between vertebrae bulge or rupture, compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots.
- Syringomyelia:Formation of fluid-filled cysts within the spinal cord, causing damage to spinal cord tissue.
- Myelopathy:A general term for any spinal cord disease, encompassing various causes and symptoms
