As movement disorders are the ones mostly fall into the category of neurodegenerative diseases, they require life time treatment and with variable outcomes. Many of them after few years have severe impairment in quality of life. Similarly most of them can have various neuropsychiatric issues along with the parent diseases and hence require multispecialty treatment and meticulous follow up. With fast growing field of pharmacological agents, management is now more better. Some of them can be subjected to surgical procedures such as deep brain stimulation or botulinum toxin therapy.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery involves implanting electrodes in specific brain areas to generate electrical impulses that modulate brain activity and treat certain medical conditions, like movement disorders. These electrodes are connected to a device, often a pulse generator, implanted under the skin in the upper chest, which delivers the stimulation.
